How to Talk About Salary With a Recruiter Early in the Process

September 24, 2026 · 1 min de lecture

An early salary conversation can save everyone time — if you handle it the right way.

Recruiters often ask about salary expectations in the very first screening call. Handled well, this conversation saves time for everyone.

Give a range, not a single number

A researched range based on the role and your experience gives room to negotiate later while still setting realistic expectations up front.

It's fine to ask their range first

"What's the budgeted range for this role?" is a completely normal and increasingly common question — many recruiters will answer directly, especially where pay transparency laws apply.

Avoid anchoring too low out of nervousness

Lowballing yourself to seem flexible or agreeable often costs more later — a well-researched range protects you without seeming unreasonable.
