How to Find a Mentor at Work (Without Making It Awkward)

Formally asking someone to "be my mentor" can feel like a big commitment to request out of nowhere. Most real mentorships start smaller than that.

Start with a single conversation

Ask someone whose career path or skill set you admire for 20 minutes of advice on a specific question. A focused ask is easy to say yes to.

Let the relationship grow naturally

If the first conversation goes well, follow up periodically with updates and new questions rather than immediately asking for an ongoing formal arrangement.

Look beyond your own department

Some of the most useful mentors sit outside your direct reporting line — they can speak more freely and see your work from a different angle.
