How to Ask for a LinkedIn Recommendation (and Write One Back)

September 25, 2026 · 1 min read

Recommendations carry weight with recruiters — here is how to request one that's actually useful.

A specific, detailed LinkedIn recommendation does more for your credibility than a vague, generic one — and most people are happy to write one if you make it easy.

Ask the right people

A former manager, a client, or a peer who directly observed your work makes a stronger recommender than someone who only knows you casually.

Make it easy to say yes

Remind them of a specific project you worked on together and mention one or two things you'd appreciate them highlighting — most people struggle to know where to start otherwise.

Reciprocate thoughtfully

When asked to write one back, be specific and honest — a recommendation that reads as generic praise helps no one, including the person who received it.
